Syracuse continued a successful weekend at the Best on the Bayou Classic with wins over Morehead State and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Against the Eagles, the Orange scored six times in the second inning to propel them to a 12-4 win. The game ended in six innings due to the mercy rule. In the second game against SIUE, Syracuse won 12-9 to push its record to 4-0, its best start since the 2011 season.

On Friday, the Orange beat Mississippi Valley State and Southern by a combined score of 31-2, with the game against the Jaguars ending in five innings.

Freshman Tessa Galipeau started the scoring for SU in the bottom of the first with her first collegiate home run. She ended the day a triple shy of the cycle with a pair of RBIs and a pair of runs.

Morehead State tied the game in the top of the second inning off a Peyton Slater RBI single, but the Orange responded in the bottom of the inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

With Taylor Posner on second and Carli Campbell on first, Laila Alves bunted in Posner to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead. Rebecca Clyde and Paris Woods hit back-to-back doubles to stretch SU’s lead to 5-1. Neli Casares-Maher cleared the bases with a two-run homer down the left field line to add to SU’s advantage.

The Eagles took out starter Madi Ogden after she allowed the first six Orange batters of the inning to reach base and score. Bree Sexton replaced Ogden and loaded the bases with just one out but escaped the jam without allowing any runs. Syracuse battered Ogden for seven runs on six hits in just an inning of work.

Morehead State threatened in the fourth inning with a pair of RBI doubles by Slater and Peyton Jordan to bring back the deficit to 7-4, but Kirya Kingery struck out looking to end the frame.

In the fifth and sixth innings, sloppy fielding by right fielder Erin Boyle doomed Morehead State’s chances at a comeback. After a one-out Campbell walk, Alves singled through the right side of the infield and made it all the way to third on an error by Boyle. One batter later, Alves scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-4.

In the sixth, Kelly Breen reached on an error, and just like with Alves, made it to third as a result of an error by Boyle. Angel Jasso hit a sacrifice fly to score Breen and make it 12-4, invoking the mercy rule before the end of the sixth inning. Four of the Orange’s five runs in the final two frames were unearned. 

Lindsey Hendrix secured her first win of the season with six solid frames, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out a career-high seven. In six starts last year, Hendrix pitched two complete games including a shutout.

In the nightcap, Syracuse beat SIUE 12-9 in the first meeting between the two schools to maintain its perfect record at the Best on the Bayou Classic. The Orange allowed four home runs but still overpowered the Cougars offensively.

Syracuse faces Stephen F. Austin at 10 a.m. tomorrow in its final game of the Best on the Bayou Classic.
