Kill the Buzz and Thomas Newson talk about touring with EDM artist Hardwell

Kill the Buzz and Thomas Newson kick off their tour with Hardwell — voted the world’s number one DJ in 2013 — with a show at F Shed at the Market Friday night. While Newson is relatively new to the scene and is being hailed as a “wunderkid,” Kill the Buzz has toured with Hardwell before.

Kill the Buzz and Newson both hail from the Netherlands, and said they’re looking forward to the United States tour as a way to get their unique sound into clubs.

“The tour for us is more about getting our names here in the United States,” Kill the Buzz said. “We’ve done gigs in the United States, but it’s still important to also go to smaller venues and to get your name out to clubs so people really get to know you and so can you get a bond with the audience.”

The three DJs will travel on a bus across America for the entirety of the tour, spending downtime just as normal friends would.

“We do a lot of personal things together,” Kill the Buzz said. “We even sleep together. We get to learn each other a little bit more than you usually do with your colleagues.”

As for what to expect at the show, Kill the Buzz described a typical EDM audience — lots of different types of people of all ages who enjoy the same type of music.

Both world-traveled DJs were impressed with audience styles in the U.S.

“You guys always have the neon colors that I have never seen anywhere else. Everybody’s dressed up, bringing stuff to the venue,” Kill the Buzz said. “Everybody’s just dressed to impress, you know?”

Both DJs tailor their sets to fit their audience — this means it could change from show to show. Kill the Buzz said that when people don’t respond well to his first track, he knows that he has to switch it up a little to get on the same level as the audience.

Kill the Buzz’s style fluctuates somewhere between melodic and groovy, but also includes some “EDM bangers.” He said he looks forward to making more melodic vocal tracks.

Kill the Buzz desires to be seen more as an artist, not just a DJ.

“I want to have that song that everybody would say like that ‘hey, do you remember that song you created like five to ten years ago? That really great vocal track? I still listen to it. I still sing it in the shower, when I’m driving the car,’” he said. “That’s what I really want to aim for.”

Newson also uses many different sounds in his sets. He said that he enjoys many different types of genres in addition to EDM. He looks forward to perhaps having his own label, but first just wants to “make his audience dance.”

Both agreed that going on tour and making the music they love is more than just earning a living. They are excited about the opportunity to get new people vibing to their songs.

“Money is not like the most important thing about being a DJ,” Kill the Buzz said. “It’s more about giving something to the world.”
