Syracuse University’s chapter of Psi Upsilon fraternity has been placed on immediate interim suspension due to hazing allegations, Allen Groves, SU’s senior vice president and chief student experience officer, said in a campus-wide email Tuesday evening.

The chapter is currently under investigation for conduct that allegedly “placed students at risk” and must cease all activities, Groves said. The announcement comes a week after SU’s Phi Kappa Psi fraternity was also placed on interim suspension for alleged hazing.

“Syracuse University has long valued the role of Greek life in our community when its conduct follows these organizations’ stated values,” Groves wrote in the email. “It is unfortunate that the actions depicted in these two cases undermine the positive contributions of our campus’ fraternity and sorority organizations.”

Groves said SU received evidence that reportedly depicted Psi U fraternity members engaging in “degrading” behavior. The email did not detail the alleged hazing behaviors.

A day before Phi Psi’s suspension, multiple videos surfaced online allegedly showing its members involved in hazing activities. Chancellor Kent Syverud said he was “disgusted” by the footage and called it “repugnant” in an Oct. 16 campus-wide email about the suspension. Since then, at least 10 different videos claiming to show SU fraternities hazing pledges have continued to circulate on social media.

SU’s Office of Community Standards and the Department of Public Safety are investigating the allegations against both Phi Psi and Psi U, Groves’ email states. SU will also work with the Syracuse Police Department to determine whether any criminal activity took place.

The university will provide any updates related to action taken against either fraternity on the website for SU’s Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Groves wrote. SU will not publicize any disciplinary action against students associated with these allegations, per federal privacy laws.

As of 10:53 p.m. Tuesday, SU’s Psi U chapter did not respond to The Daily Orange’s request for comment. A representative from the international Psi U fraternity said the organization does not have a statement on the allegations at this time.
