Syracuse starter Jessie DiPasquale walked her fourth and fifth batters of the game with no outs to begin the bottom of the fourth. It was just one of three times runners would be in scoring position the entire afternoon for either team.

Madison Knight replaced DiPasquale in the circle and promptly got Erin Howard to pop out, but a single from Andrea Perez followed, loading the bases. The next batter, Caroline Hobbes, opened the scoring, singling to center field to drive in Miranda Arruda. Knight bounced back, striking out Amber Johnson and forcing a Taylor Hill pop out, to limit the opportunity.

That single run was all the Pirates needed to pick up the series finale win. In the final game of a three-game series against Seton Hall (19-16, 9-6 Big East), Syracuse (20-18, 4-11 Atlantic Coast) fell 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel. The Orange mustered just two hits while Seton Hall had three. SU came into the contest winners of 13 of its last 16 matchups with Seton Hall and hadn’t been shut out by the Pirates since April 10, 2005.

DiPasquale and Seton Hall starter Kyra Kreuscher cruised through the first inning. The Pirates were the first to put the pressure on, with runners on the corners in the bottom of the second and one out. But DiPasquale got Hobbes to ground out and ended the inning by catching Johnson looking.

No runners made it into scoring position until the bottom of the fourth when Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead.

Syracuse attempted small ball to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Knight led off by drawing a walk and Peyton Schemer moved her over on a sac bunt. Makenzie Foster followed with a bunt single, which put two runners in scoring position with one out. Yet, Angel Jasso lined out and Madelyn Lopez flew out, keeping the score at zero for SU.

No one got on base from that point heading into the seventh. Kreuscher finished off her complete game shutout, getting Laila Morales-Alves to pop out and Knight to ground out. Despite hitting Schemmer with a pitch, Foster lined out to Perez at shortstop to end the game in a 1-0 defeat.

Kreuscher had no trouble navigating the Syracuse lineup. The Orange mounted just two hits and had only six baserunners. Kreuscher only struck out one SU hitter but forced 13 flyouts over her seven innings of work.

On the other side, DiPasquale and Knight in relief put together a one-run performance. DiPasquale struggled to find the strike zone, walking five batters in just three innings, and gave up the winning run. But Knight put together a solid relief outing, giving up just two hits in three innings out of the bullpen.

The Orange look to bounce back Wednesday against Canisius before facing Pittsburgh for a weekend road series. The Panthers currently sit a spot below the Orange in the ACC standings.
