Incumbent Republican Ryan McMahon defeated Democrat Bill Kinne in the race for Onondaga County Executive on Tuesday.

As of 10:05p.m. Tuesday, McMahon had 61.06% of the votes, while Kinne had 38.76%.

McMahon will continue as Onondaga County Executive after being elected for his first term in 2019, though he was appointed in 2018 after now-SUNY ESF President Joanie Mahoney stepped down from the position.

As county executive, McMahon led Onondaga County during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and helped facilitate Micron Technology’s $100 billion investment for a new semiconductor facility in Clay.

“We’ve gotten in and we’ve led and we need to bring these partnerships together, and we need to execute, we need to deliver,” McMahon said at a Tuesday night election party. “That’s delivering on workforce, that’s delivering on new sites of supply chains with Micron, that’s delivering on making real progress and determining what progress looks like for the lead paint issue, that’s leading on the opioid crisis.”

Before he became the county executive, McMahon served as a common councilor for the City of Syracuse. He represented the third council district for six years and spent seven years as chair of the Onondaga County Legislature.

Some of McMahon’s main initiatives include the construction of an $85 million aquarium in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor, progressing economic development and bringing more green spaces to the county. In the election, the Civil Service Employees Association endorsed McMahon.
