Syracuse Athletics announced it will honor former Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim when SU men’s basketball faces Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome on Feb. 24. According to SU, “Coach Jim Boeheim Day” will recognize Boeheim’s accomplishments.

After 47 years at the helm, Boeheim retired at the end of the 2022-23 season. He was the longest tenured coach in Syracuse basketball history and one of NCAA basketball’s winningest coaches of all time.

Boeheim led the Orange to 1,015 official wins, 35 NCAA Tournament appearances, 18 Sweet Sixteens, seven Elite Eights, five Final Fours and three National Championship appearances.

In 2003, during Boeheim’s 27th season in charge, Syracuse defeated Kansas to win its only National Championship in school history.

Prior to coaching at SU, Boeheim played for the Orange from 1963-66 under head coach Fred Lewis. A native of Lyons, New York, Boeheim helped lead the Orange to a 22-6 record and the program’s second-ever NCAA Tournament. He joined Syracuse’s coaching staff as a graduate student in 1969.

“Coach Boeheim is an iconic figure in Central New York and to all Orange fans and alumni around the world,” Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack said in a statement about the celebration. “His remarkable career and commitment to Syracuse University and our community will never be replicated. February 24th will provide our fans the opportunity to celebrate and thank Coach Boeheim.
