On Sunday, Syracuse headed to the Charles River in Boston to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Every year on the second-to-last weekend in October, many of the top clubs and colleges compete in a grueling 5,000 meter race on one of the most historic courses in the country. After a 5th-place finish last year in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships, the Syracuse men hoped to improve.

In the Championship 4+ against a 15-team field, including Cornell, Princeton, and Georgetown, Syracuse would hold their own, finishing fourth in the event and third out of the collegiate teams with a time of 15:52.7.

Later in the afternoon, Syracuse turned its attention to the Championship 8+ final. In the final against teams that Syracuse finished behind in the IRAs such as Washington, Brown and Yale, the Orange oarsmen bested them all, finishing first place out of the collegiate teams with a time of 13:33.3.

The only team to finish ahead of Syracuse was the United States national team. This marks the first time in program history that Syracuse has won the Men’s Championship Eight final.

Syracuse women’s team entered two eights into the Women’s Championship Final. After last year’s 17th place team finish at the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Rowing Championships, Syracuse looked to move up the rankings.

The A boat finished sixth (eighth overall) and the B boat finished 17th (20th overall) out of the collegiate teams with times of 15:31.83 and 16:04.21 respectively. The Orange beat out teams like USC, Tennessee, and the ‘B’ teams of Yale and Brown.
