University Union will host an advanced screening of the movie “Green Book” on Nov. 7 at 8:30 p.m. in HBC Gifford Auditorium, UU announced Wednesday night.

“Green Book” stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali as Tony Lip and Don Shirley, respectively. The film tells the story of Tony, an Italian-American bouncer and Don, an African-American pianist as they head to the American South for Don’s concert tour. The duo uses the “Green Book” to see where African-Americans were welcome at the time. The film explores themes of racism as they work to push past their differences.

“Green Book,” is set to be released in theaters on Nov. 21, but has already won several awards at the at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September. Eric Kohn, the chief film critic at IndieWire, called the film a “triumph,” praising both Mortensen and Ali’s performances.

“Mortensen inhabits the character with a kind of authenticity that endows some of the more heavy-handed showdowns with surprising depth …. and Ali’s major studio role since his Oscar win for “Moonlight” allows him to transform a part that could have instantly fallen into a crude caricature and make it real,” Kohn wrote.

The film is directed by Peter Farrelly and has a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Oct. 24. Farrelly is best known for his films “There’s Something About Mary,” “Dumb and Dumber” and “Movie 43.”
