Future SU student commends university for expelling Theta Tau

Dear Editor,

I am a senior in high school and will be attending Syracuse University in the fall. As an incoming freshman, I want the campus to be friendly, safe and welcoming. I have always wanted to join a sorority, and the idea of meeting a new group of girls that I would be friends with forever is appealing to me. But after reading the news of Theta Tau using racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic and sexist comments, I’m thinking twice about Greek life.

I agree that the fraternity should be suspended for this incident because it offended so many people in the Syracuse community once the videos were leaked. The members of Theta Tau apologized for the videos and explained that they were not intended to be racist but to “roast” the incoming members of the fraternity. This is no excuse for the revolting language they used, and the university made the right choice of expelling the fraternity from campus.

I am glad that Syracuse University stepped in and put a stop to the incident and decided to expel Theta Tau. I feel more comfortable about joining Greek life next year knowing that the school is addressing negative behaviour and attempting to create a safer and more inclusive environment for the entire student body. The school prides itself in having a community that is  multinational, multicultural and open-minded. Fraternities and sororities should set an example to others that hatred and bigotry will not be tolerated.

Sincerely,

Julianna Sutow
