SU construction update: University Place water main in service; construction of Disability Cultural Center starts

Accessible restrooms are being installed on floors 1-8 of DellPlain Hall as part of more than 120 construction projects happening on the Syracuse University campus this summer.

The new water main along the University Place promenade has been installed, tested and approved, said Pete Sala, vice president and chief campus facilities officer, in a construction update sent to the Syracuse University community on Monday.

Sala’s email said the water main is now in service, providing water to the buildings along University Place. Plinth construction also continues on the University Place promenade and storm drainage piping is 70 percent complete.

The University Place promenade is a part of the Campus Framework. The university released a 42-page draft of the Campus Framework on June 20, detailing plans for the physical SU campus over the next 20 years.

The Quad 2 Parking Lot is “taking shape,” Sala said in the email. The curbing for the parking lot has been installed and the asphalt binder course has been placed. Final paving will occur just before the lot reopens in late July.

Over the summer, SU is working on completing more than 120 campus construction projects. Here are the other construction updates Sala included in his email:



Brewster/Boland/Brockway Complex electrical service replacement: Excavation and duct bank construction has been completed along the east edge of the Stadium parking lot. The contractor is preparing to perform the excavation to install the duct bank across Van Buren Street, which will be closed July 16 through July 29.

Center of Excellence Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Lab: Work is underway to create a UAV lab in the Center of Excellence High Bay where researchers will study UAV controls and tracking.

Center for Science and Technology siding replacement: This project is proceeding ahead of schedule, with about 70 percent of the siding having already been replaced.

Crouse College sloped glazing and masonry improvements: Sala said in the email that the contractor continues to work on repairing the skylights. The contractor will start the masonry repairs this week, with anticipated completion by the end of July.

DellPlain Hall: Bathroom renovation work continues on schedule. New windows for the bathrooms have been delivered and installation has begun. As part of the renovation, one accessible restroom will be built on floors 1-8 and two will be built on the ground floor.

HBC elevator replacement: The installation of the new elevator in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall is halfway done. The elevator will provide accessible service to the Gifford Auditorium level for the first time and will be in service in mid-August.

Lyman Hall renovations: There are two phases of the renovations. In phase one, renovations and relocations are substantially complete for the Army and Air Force ROTC Departments. Both ROTC groups have relocated from Archbold Gymnasium to Lyman Hall. Renovations are nearly complete and furniture has been install for the Office of Research Integrity and Protections, Office of Student Activities and Office of Sponsored Programs departments in advance of their move from Bowne Hall and Skytop, which is scheduled for the first week of August.

In phase two, the creation of three new classrooms with audiovisual technology is underway. Sala said in the email that the contractor is focusing efforts on completing the classrooms by Aug. 15 in time for the start of the fall semester. Work will continue into the fall to complete offices for the GSA and GSO Departments for their relocation in January 2017.

Quad improvements: The installation of tent tie-downs is complete. The irrigation system is operational in manual operation. With final controls being completed by the end of July, grounds staff will schedule and operate the irrigation system through a smartphone app. The fence around the Quad — which is currently preventing pedestrian traffic — will be removed on July 22.

Regent Theatre Complex: Renovations are underway to create a new accessible restroom for the theater. A new concrete floor has been poured and framing for the new walls has started. The project is scheduled to be complete in the first week of September.

Roof replacement updates: The following roof replacements have been completed: the Schine Student Center Dining Wing, Newhouse II, Iocolano-Petty Football Wing of Manley Field House, David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics (White Hall), Link Hall and Heroy Geology Building. Flanagan Gymnasium’s roof is 70 percent complete. Some minimal contractor presence will be on these roofs until late July.

Schine Student Center — Disability Cultural Center relocation: Construction has started in the former Cash Operations area, which will be the new home for the Disability Cultural Center inside Schine. This relocation will bring it from the Hoople Building to the center of Student Affairs in Schine. This work and move will be complete in August.

Schine Student Center glass door replacement: Schine’s exterior glass doors will be replaced beginning in August and continuing in the fall. This project will also include a full access control system for the building and door operators compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Work will be coordinated with fall semester activities in the building to minimize disruptions.

Sims Hall stair replacement: The replacement of the two north stairs is underway simultaneously, with walks and site stairs having been removed. Sala said in the email that the concrete stair foundations are in good condition, which will help the project stay on schedule for completion this fall.

Steam line replacement at Waverly Avenue/Comstock Avenue: During the excavation of the steam line, Sala said in the email that the contractor’s crew noted the existing 30-inch and 8-inch water mains are in need of minor repairs. The City Water Department will repair the 8-inch main this Wednesday, which will take about four hours. During this time, water service will not be available in Booth Hall.

On July 18, SU’s contractor is scheduled to perform repair work on the 30-inch water main, which will take eight to 12 hours. Water service to Watson, Kimmel and Marion halls will not be available during this time. Work is on schedule for completion in early August, and disruption of water services to these residence halls is being coordinated with SU Housing.

Washington Arms first floor renovation: Renovation work continues on schedule and is about 65 percent done. The interior work includes a reconfiguration to create new student rooms and a fully accessible student room. The exterior work, which is 45 percent done, includes rebuilding a new retaining wall and concrete stair replacement. New landscaping will be installed upon completion of the project.

Women’s Building studio: The project to improve the studio inside the Women’s Building includes a new accessible ramp, which has been constructed on the south end of the space. New ceiling and light fixture installation is completed. Painting and wood wall paneling refinishing commenced last week. The new Harlequin dance floor is scheduled to be installed the last week of July.
