Syracuse senior quarterback Charley Loeb lost out on the starting job in camp, but SU head coach Scott Shafer said the Orange will try to keep him on board as a graduate assistant next year.

Charley Loeb may have never won a starting quarterback battle, but Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer seems to think Loeb has got a career ahead of him in coaching.

Shafer said SU will attempt to keep Loeb on as a graduate assistant after this season.

“Charley’s a special person,” Shafer said on his weekly Tuesday teleconference. “He’s really one of the most unselfish people I’ve been around. He’s a very good student and his mother says he’s the best-looking kid on the team.

“He’s also decided he thinks he wants to coach football and we’re going to try to keep him on as a graduate assistant here when he’s done playing.”

This fall, Loeb lost out on the quarterback job to Oklahoma transfer Drew Allen, who then lost the job to sophomore Terrel Hunt. Loeb currently helps call plays in and serves as the team’s holder.

He nearly scored a rushing touchdown on a fake field goal against Wake Forest, but was stopped just short of the goal line.

In practice, Shafer said, Loeb has been a strong team player and helps the rest of the quarterbacks regularly.

“He’s just such a team player,” Shafer said. “He’s always encouraging to all of his teammates, including the guys he’s competed with. From a character point of view, there’s just nothing about him that I could say that isn’t just so positive about being a true team player.”
