Final Four

Subdued Marshall Street crowds require little police involvement

Following the Orange’s close loss in the Final Four round of the NCAA tournament Saturday, subdued crowds on Marshall Street made safety officers’ jobs easy.

About 30 officers from the Department of Public Safety and the Syracuse Police Department came to patrol the Marshall Street area, said John Sardino, associate chief of DPS. This marked an increase from the about 12 officers who patrolled the same area during Syracuse’s Elite Eight game last weekend.

The number was also a slight increase from the Orange’s last run in the tournament finals in 2003, which Sardino attributed to a higher number of students enrolled at Syracuse University.

No issues had arisen that required officers’ attention as of 11:45 p.m., he said.

Of the disappointed crowds who dispersed from various Marshall Street restaurants after the game, Sardino said the reaction was in line with officers’ expectations given the outcome of the game.

“It’s about what we expected,” he said, adding that officers would remain in the area until about 1:45 a.m.

Following this, he said, officers would be dispatched to take care of issues on campus during the rest of the night.
