Yellow police tape blocks off both sides of the street on a section of the 900 block of Comstock Avenue on Saturday morning, after an accident between an SUV and Centro bus. Syracuse Police Department Sgt. Jim Renna said the accident was serious and possibly fatal.

A serious, possibly fatal accident between an SUV and Centro bus happened early Saturday morning, closing off Comstock Avenue from Stratford Street to East Colvin Street, Syracuse Police Department Sgt. Jim Renna said.

There is no information yet as to if the accident involved Syracuse University students or if any students are injured.

Yellow police tape marked off the scene where a white GMC Denali had driven off the road and come to a stop on the sidewalk and part of a lawn on the 900 block of Comstock Avenue, parallel to Oakwood Cemetery. The car’s damage appeared to be mainly along the driver’s side, including a busted headlight, the driver’s side rearview mirror hanging off the car and some damage near the taillight.

A Centro bus on the route from South Campus to College Place was in the center of the road and appeared to have damage to its front. One windshield wiper was broken and hanging from the front of the bus, and there was a small crack on the left side of the windshield.

At least seven police cars remained at the scene as of 2:45 a.m. Two SPD Crime Scene Unit vans were also at the scene, leaving at about 2:30 a.m. Debris spread across the road near the scene of the accident, including a headlight.

Police originally blocked off the road using flares before wooden Department of Public Works barriers were put in place to keep traffic from entering the closed off section of road. Buses on the South Campus route were seen driving along Stratford Street to Lancaster Avenue as a detour.
